![]() No release date is earmarked for the Temple Run project, but considering the franchise traffic jam that's hitting 2015, sometime in 2016 or later is probably a safe bet. Game studio Naughty Dog and their Uncharted team must now be figuring out whether they can get their own Indy wannabe, Nathan Drake, to cinemas sooner rather than later. Spin-offs such as Temple Run: Brave and Temple Run: Oz followed in its wake, and copycats tried to cash-in with Temple Guns, Temple Jump and Pyramid Run. The original game was released in 2011, quickly becoming a phenomenon as bored commuters, excitable kids and fans of a good game got hooked, and soon it was at the top of the iTunes free game charts, using the freemium model where the game was free to download but in-game add-ons were paid for to earn its way in the world. ![]() If it sounds a bit too far fetched - and a little bit too much like the beginning of Raiders - fret not, because there won't be any power-ups in the film. Running from the death monkeys had me scarred as a kid, but it was one of the most tugging-at-your-heartstrings experiences that I have ever had. When I saw this extension, I immediately relished my memories from when I was only a wee one. Temple Run is, of course, the endless running game that sees an Indiana Jones-a-like explorer who's just stolen an idol from a jungle temple pegging it away from evil beasties at a brisk pace, dodging death traps as he hoovers up gold coins and magical power-ups. Temple run has influenced me from when I was at a young age. and game creators Imangi Studios goes through, Temple Run is getting a movie. And now, if a deal with Gravity producer David Heyman, Warner Bros. I suppose for those who are already quite sick of Temple Run 2, this may represent a decent change of pace, but it's still just too close to the original, both temporally and conceptually, to be worth a significant look.Angry Birds is getting a movie. The only reason that this game exists is because it's a movie tie-in, and it makes me wonder if Temple Run 2 was really delayed by a significant amount of time because this release is just too suspiciously close to make sense. It appears to have been developed outside of Imangi proper. Even the Oz license just feels generic, lacking much distinction beyond the yellow brick road. In fact, that describes everything in this game: it just all seems obfuscating, rather than edifying or even just entertaining. It all looks nice but it's just too confusing. However, the flora on the sides can make it difficult to tell where a turning point is, and there seems to be an emphasis on sudden surprises that are difficult to dodge due to their suddenness. The scenery is certainly interesting, as there's the famous yellow brick road to run on. The new music box key system doesn't offer much in the way of great rewards, so there's not much incentive to care about them. But in this case, Temple Run 2 had just only very recently released, and this game takes many of the mechanics that it added, and applies its own changes. Temple Run: Brave came months after the original's launch, and at least had enough of a change of pace and tweaked mechanics to stand on its own after playing the original for a while. It's just that, while playing Temple Run: Oz, I never got the feeling like any of this was really necessary. It's got that Temple Run 2 base, with a couple of different tweaks. It's more fun and less stressful than mine cart sequences from Temple Run 2. So ready or not, here comes Temple Run: Oz. Yes, this is another Temple Run game, only weeks after Temple Run 2.
